Today I visited St Martins Church in Canterbury, to learn of another
woman more or less erased from History, Bertha Regina of Kent…
Born in 580 AD inTours, Neutrasia…now a part of France, Bertha, a Christian,
agreed to marry King Ethelbert, the Pagan King of Kent on the condition
she could build a chapel in Canterbury and worship her religion there.
Her wish was granted.
Queen Bertha’s small chapel, the first Christian Chapel to be built
in England…. effectively brought Christianity to England,
BEFORE Augustine arrived from Rome. You’d never think so
reading the intro to the church.
I say it again. You learn little or NOTHING of interest in school.
I’m of no religion but feel Bertha Regina should be fully recognised
for being the first !
Not blinkin’ Augustine….grrrrrrr
