24/7 Gagosian Gallery/Shop.
Mega commercial gallery Gagosian knows how to cater for
its grasping, clawing clientele who have money to burn but
scarce a cultural drop in their veins.
It has opened, to coincide with Art Basel, its Gallery of virtual
images of art works, around the clock.
It doesn’t take long to look at a virtual, very pricey pic on the wall.
You can even zoom into it with a digital device, then purchase it from
one of the two staff on duty….and arrange to have it shipped to a
vault somewhere. There it can sit and gain in value.
Unless that is, you are the likes of Japanese business man
Ryoei Saito.
Saito bought van Gogh’s ‘Portrait of Dr Gachet' in 1990 for $82.5m.
He willed it should be cremated with him on his death.
Saito died…the painting has not been seen since.
