The Onion.

The Onion is mysterious.
It is an ancient Asian root
made up of layered skins.

The apple has it’s pips within.
The plum it’s wooden stone.
The pumpkin harbours lots of seeds,
The broad bean cradles beans.

But…the onion has no centre
It is an empty thing.
There is no arcane secret
to be found within.

But lo behold the tall thin stems
that shoot up to the light,
With pods becoming flower heads.
Containing seeds of life.

And though an onion sliced by knife
may often draw our tears,
It’s been our faithful kitchen friend,
for 7000 years!
