Sophie…Her History in Short Lines.
My name is Sophie…I doubt
that you’ll have heard of me.
I grew no beard you see…
I wore a skirt.
I did not shout
out to the world…hey….
LOOK AT ME.
My name is Sophie…
I was born in Switzerland,
I died from toxic poisoning
in 1943…aged of 53.
Max Bill , who did not die,
was there with me…
I was a ‘modernist’
along with all those famous men,
and several woman too…
A whole exciting group of us,
were bursting with the new.
They give art names,
but in a simple word,
‘Design’ appealed to me….
and to Peggy Guggenheim, that visionary…
Those were the days
of geometry…
Circles, Squares and Polka Dots
became my cosmic universe.
And Paris cradled us
from doubt…until
The Nazis boots advanced.
My name is Sophie Taeuber-Arp.
Mine was a kind of visual jazz…
You can Google Doodle me.
I also loved to dance.
