The Famous Shane McGowan
The place was Merrion Sq in Dublin City
The day was summery and very bright
The flowers sang the song of being pretty
The scent of all the roses sweet and light.
I strolled with BaIrbra around the little pathways
Looking for the Marquee with the sound
Ed Deane was singing Devil’s Spine and sliding his guitar
The crowds were drifting in and out and floating all around
That was the day the famous Shane McGowan touched my scarf
And he went tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk when he laughed
Shane smiled his toothless wonder smile
He had no shame or doubt
He listened to the sycophants the man was most polite
His gums a fleshy pinkness in his grinning happy mouth
A bottle in each hand he wore a long black overcoat
(But) the roses wore just petals in the summer sunshine light.
Ed Deane was singing Devil’s Spine and sliding his guitar
The crowds were drifting in and out and floating all around
That was the day the famous Shane McGowan touched my scarf
And he went tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk when he laughed.
Victoria stood sweetly by his side
She’s been with him thru thick and thin
She’s been his guiding light
Shane’s getting teeth she told us there’s a dentist all lined up
He’s looking forward to eating nuts he’d had to give them up
Walnuts especially she said..he loves them very much.
Ed Deane was singing Devil’s Spine and sliding his guitar
The crowds were drifting in and out and floating near and far
That was the day the famous Shane McGowan touched my scarf
And he went tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk when he laughed.
